Flute J.A.Jayant
Flute J.A. Jayant is a young Carnatic flute exponent—flautist, collaborator, educator, and composer—performing across the globe and actively popularizing the art of Carnatic flute playing. A prodigy who began performing at the age of seven, he is a musician of national and international repute, with over 52 international tours across more than 25 countries, and close to 2000 solo concerts and jugalbandis/collaborative performances to his credit.
Affectionately known as Flute J.A. Jayant, he was born into a musical family and was naturally drawn to music at an early age. He began rigorous training on the bamboo flute in the guru–shishya parampara at the age of four under the guidance of his grandfather and guru, the late Flute T. S. Sankaran, a prime disciple of the legendary Flute Mali. Jayant is widely recognized today as a torchbearer of the Flute Mali bani in Carnatic flute music.
Blessed with innate talent, deep passion, and primordial training, Jayant astonished the Carnatic music fraternity by presenting Rāgam–Tānam–Pallavi in Trikālam in his very first concert at the age of seven, an achievement that surprised senior musicians, co-artistes, and audiences alike.
He is renowned for his unique and virtuosic fingering and blowing techniques, enabling him to render music with exceptional clarity even in the challenging lower octaves on bass and double-bass, thick-walled bamboo flutes, while maintaining impeccable shruti śuddham and tonal purity. His expressive, graceful, and bhāva-laden gāyaki-style playing brings out the lyrical soul of compositions, earning him sustained admiration from senior musicians, co-artistes, connoisseurs, and rasikās. His distinctive musical voice and lyrical expressivity have inspired many flautists of the present and younger generations.
Jayant is the first Carnatic flautist to unveil and perform on 106 cm long double-bass (bansuri) flutes, creating a deeply meditative experience for audiences, and has also performed on 15 cm piccolo flutes, showcasing remarkable versatility.
Regarded as a global ambassador of Indian Classical Music, Flute J.A. Jayant has performed at prestigious sabhas and iconic venues including the Madras Music Academy, Swathi Sangeethotsavam, Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Center, Shanmukhananda Hall (Mumbai), Kalakshetra Foundation, Siri Fort (New Delhi), Purana Qila (Delhi), Chowdiah Hall (Bengaluru), HCL Concerts, Kennedy Center (Washington D.C.), Copenhagen Jazz Festival, Théâtre de la Ville (Paris), FES World Sacred Music Festival, Darbar Festival (UK), Milap Festival (UK), Sydney Music Festival, DUCTAC Auditorium (Dubai), Rietberg Museum (Zurich), World Sacred Spirit Festival, Festival des Sacrées Journées de Strasbourg, World Music Festival (Chicago), Évora Festival, among many others.
He has performed extensively across India, the USA, Canada, U.K., Sri Lanka, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Luxembourg, France, Germany, Belgium, Netherlands, Portugal, Morocco, Re-Union Islands, Mauritius, Australia, New Zealand, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia, making him one of the youngest Carnatic musicians to represent Carnatic music at numerous major international festivals across Europe.
In recent years, Jayant has also made a significant mark in global fashion and interdisciplinary collaborations. He performed live music for the Giambattista Valli fashion show in November 2024, and was featured as a soloist collaborating with the Paris Symphony Orchestra for the Louis Vuitton Spring–Summer 2025 Fashion Show at the Centre Pompidou, Paris.
He was also featured in the documentary "Kalai Yaathirai", produced for a leading television channel in Singapore, highlighting his artistic journey and global contributions to Indian classical music.
His collaborative projects include work with Cristal Baschet artist Loup Barrow, The New Jungle Orchestra, guitar virtuoso John Sund, Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt, Pt. Ronu Majumdar, Pt. Ashwani Shankar, and leading Carnatic musicians such as Chitravina Ravikiran, Guitar Prasanna, and Veena Rajesh Vaidhya. He has also recorded flute music for prominent film composers including Harris Jayaraj, and for several documentaries.
Flute J.A. Jayant is an empanelled artiste of ICCR and SPIC MACAY, and has been featured in All India Radio's National Programme and Sangeet Sammelan, earning the prestigious "Top Grade" from AIR at a very young age. He has performed for the Honourable President of India, the Sangeet Natak Akademi, and the Indian Navy in Port Blair.
He has been accompanied by legendary stalwarts of Carnatic music such as Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman, Vellore Ramabhadran, T. K. Murthy, T. V. Gopalakrishnan, M. Chandrasekaran, and Trichy Sankaran.
